Philosophy on Instruction
How do you know what grip is right for you? Do you understand the different ball positions for the irons, hybrids, fairway woods, and the driver? When should you cock your wrists? Is your backswing too long or too short? Is the position of the clubface correct at different points in your swing?
These are just a few of the myriad of questions that all avid golfers struggle with from round to round. You could waste a lot of time reading articles, listening to golf announcers, or taking advice from friends, but just a few lessons with an experienced instructor will accomplish a lot more in much less time. Why? Because a good instructor understands that each student is different and needs unique advice based upon their skill level, body type, age, flexibility, etc...
A good instructor isn't going to use the same teaching methods on a 24 year old former collegiate baseball player as he or she would on a 56 year old accountant with lower back problems. In other words, an experienced instructor doesn't force feed a singular method of teaching on all students. A good lesson starts with an assessment of a student's skill level, as well as what facet(s) of their game needs the most improvement and then proceeds with customized instruction based upon the student's capabilities. A good teacher, for example, knows how to tweak the grip, where to position the ball for solid contact, and how and when to cock the wrists. They will also match your backswing length to your flexibility and your clubface to your ball flight. These adjustments may sound complicated, but an instructor worth their fee will make it easy to understand and will provide the student an opportunity to improve upon all aspects of their game.
